Overview

Ben and Lois Orford are at the forefront of the bushcraft community for a reason. Not only do they have decades of experience crafting tools for the outdoors, they also have a lifetime of experience mastering their use.

The 'Thorn XL  has come about from popular requests from customers that already own the slightly smaller Thorn and wanted something just a bit bigger for more serious cutting tasks. The Thorn XL is still a very lightweight companion blade that could be either worn as a simple neck carry or a backup to a large camp knife or parang. This is the full tang knife we make with a cutting edge that is 3” with an overall length of 7”.

These Thorns are made from 3.5mm thick stonewashed AEB-L Stainless steel  they have a scandi grind for great carving and cutting control. Being made from Stainless steel it makes a great blade for food preparation or wet weather or field dressing. AEB-L is a very fine grained stainless steel,  tough but is still easy to sharpen. These have been heat treated in house with their own heat treat recipe including a Cryo treatment to get the very best from the steel. It has a very simple skeletonised handle which makes it a very light and comfortable knife which has a full size style handle. Adding a simple blood knot at the end of the handle made from 550 paracord gives extra length to the handle without adding bulk, giving a great feel and the deep finger choil makes a compact but secure blade in the hand. The whole profile of the handle has been rounded to make it smooth and comfortable with no hot spots.

The Thorn XL TAD Edition makes a great little neck knife or back up blade that can be worn comfortably around your neck when weight is a big concern. The overall weight of this knife and sheath is a very small 59g and only 45g for the blade on its own.

The Thorn XL comes with a self locking, kydex neck carry sheath, that has a simple black 550 paracord adjustable neck loop. The hole spacing allows you to add a teklock or other belt clips if required or even add it to a larger kydex sheath as a piggy back companion blade. Our TAD Edition comes in either black or OD green kydex with our logo mirroring Ben and Lois on the blade.

The overall package gives you a lightweight, compact utility or survival blade that has many carry options and is compatible with attaching to our other kydex sheaths.

Due to the nature of custom items, slight variations may occur.
