Overview

Engineered for absolute fluid versatility under pressure, the Mamushi is a premium close-quarters tool. Forged from high-performance 80CrV2 steel, the blade features a razor-sharp full flat grind paired with a top swedge that strips away unnecessary mass, drastically reducing drag and optimizing the tip for devastating penetration. The true genius of the design lies in its extended, highly adaptable handle geometry. Unlike blades that lock you into a single stance, the Mamushi is sculpted to flow seamlessly between any hand configuration—from a standard saber or Filipino grip to high-retention reverse, ice-pick, or aggressive tip-down/edge-in scythe grips. It behaves like its namesake, coiling naturally into the contours of your hand and anchoring instantly from any angle of deployment.

To maximize this multi-grip security, the handle is finished with a traditional Japanese Tsukamaki wrap, providing an ultra-tactile, high-traction texture that locks into the palm under hard use. This wrap is permanently fused and sealed with an industrial-grade, high-strength polymer matrix, ensuring it is completely impervious to the elements, sweat, and hard impact—it is fundamentally robust and built to never go anywhere. Paired with a hand-finished, deeply chamfered sheath optimized for comfortable, zero-snag inside-the-waistband (IWB) carry, the Mamushi remains completely low-profile until the exact moment it is deployed. It is an uncompromising, permanent extension of your defensive mechanics.

Even the carry system was designed with the same level of intentionality. The sheath is fully chamfered and rounded, removing any sharp corners or hotspots. Setup to accept a centerline mounted DDC clip it will also fit in various configurations a soft loop, Mummert Ti Clip and many others.  This makes it ideal for comfortable, discreet carry—whether inside the waistband or in any other preferred position—ensuring that the Sea Bird is always ready without being a hindrance.

Due to the nature of custom items, slight variations may occur.

Behind the Scenes with Gross Motor Gear

With a background in design and the arts, Shawn Old transitioned into knife making in 2020 out of a functional necessity: He had a specific vision for a defensive tool that simply didn't exist in the market. What began as a personal quest to manufacture that single "missing" design quickly evolved into a dedicated business as other professionals recognized the efficacy of the work.

As a self-taught maker based in the Kansas City area, he is obsessed with carryability. A knife is only useful if it’s on your person, which is why he focuses heavily on "zero-inconvenience" ergonomics—rounded, chamfered sheaths and slim profiles that disappear inside the waistband. By combining 80Cr V2 steel with geometry optimized for both power and concealment, I create tools for those who refuse to compromise between comfort and capability.

Drawing on more than a decade of experience as a Krav Maga instructor for military, police, and civilians, He integrates the tactical principles of disciplines like Tanto Jitsu, Bushidokan, Fencing, and specialized blade systems including Libre and Piper. This collective expertise ensures that every blade isn't just an art piece, but a vetted tool designed for the realities of self-defense.
