Overview

The Dirigo Belt Axe TAD Edition is a Maine wedge pattern axe crafted using the same U.S. tool steel and forged in the same manner as Brant and Cochran’s larger axes. It is just a little smaller with a 1.75 lb axe head hung on a 17” hickory handle.

They honor the local heritage of axe making by forging Maine wedge pattern axes using traditional forging techniques. Their axes are world-class due to the care and craftsmanship they put into forging and hafting each one. Brant & Cochran strive to make heirloom quality axes that can be used now and passed down for generations.

The heart of the Dirigo Belt Axe lies in its iconic Maine wedge pattern axe head, weighing in at 1.75 lbs. Each axe head is individually forged to exacting standards, heat treated to a Rockwell hardness of 56-58 and honed until it is “wicked sharp.”

Perfect to put in a backpack for use on the trail, or for splitting wood and kindling around the fire pit, wood stove or home hearth. Despite its small size, the Dirigo Belt Axe is a versatile tool for the backwoods, truck or home.

Our TAD Edition features a custom Maine-made leather sheath and a leather overstrike collar with our signature topo pattern laser applied. Finally our logo is stamped into the head in the traditional edge oriented fashion.

Expertly designed and beautifully crafted, the versatility of the Dirigo belt axe makes for a reliable companion under any circumstance.

Behind the scenes with Brant & Cochran:

Brant & Cochran was founded in 2015 after Steve Ferguson could not find a high-quality, American-made axe for his godson who was going to forestry school. Being in Maine, which was once a center of axe making in the U.S., Steve, his brother Mark and their partner Barry Worthing decided to do something about it. Brant & Cochran’s mission is no less than preserving and reviving the traditional craft of axe making in Maine.

In 2018, they sold their first Maine wedge pattern axe: The Allagash Cruiser. This was followed up by the Dirigo Belt Axe in 2019, and the limited edition Forester’s Friend, a Maine wedge double bit cruiser axe, in 2021.
